Anxiety is a normal response to a crisis or stressful situation. But some people struggle with it all the time, not only when they are in a tough situation. For these people, methods of controlling anxiety, especially those that don't use drugs, can allow themselves to return to a happier state of being.
1. Remove yourself from situations that cause stress, when possible. While you might not be able to leave a stressful job right away, start looking for a new one. If Sunday dinner with the in-laws is stressing you out, consider going less often, or moving the gathering to a place where you feel more relaxed. This is the most obvious method of reducing stress, but it is worth mentioning, because often people can feel better if they just make a few simple changes.
2. It is very important to get enough sleep. Individuals who don't spend at least 8 hours a night sleeping are more prone to illness, as well as not dealing as well with life's daily struggles. Our bodies and minds need adequate rest in order to be able to deal with the world.
3. Start exercising. Exercise produces chemicals in the brain that relieve anxiety, and even moderate amounts can be helpful. Instead of vegging in front of the TV when you are trying to calm down, go for a twenty minute walk. Regular exercise is good for you, both body and mind, and can help you deal with problems in your life.
4. Set aside some time to do something that you find relaxing. People work so hard, both at their jobs and at home, that they sometimes forget that indulging yourself occasionally is healthy. Your job and your family will both benefit if you spend a little time at the movies, out with friends, or in a bubble bath.
5. Lower your sugar and caffeine intake. Both of these items can cause people to feel jittery and not deal with stress as well. Cutting back on coffee, caffeinated soda, energy drinks, and other sources of caffeine and sugar can help you cope better.
Anxiety is a normal and natural reaction to stressful events and situations. But when it starts invading your life beyond the realm of difficult situations, you need to do something about it. Controlling anxiety without drugs is quite possible and many people find these methods very effective.
