The plantar type which grows on the soles of the feet, are maybe the most problematic, as they can grow inward due to pressure and make walking painful. Black specks, the ends of capillaries, may be seen in the center of a lump. A doctor can remove them, but they have been known to grow back.

The type that grows in the genital areas complicate the answer when one asks what are warts. These are also infections brought on by certain strains of HPV. Some of those same strains are also responsible for genital cancers, although the two conditions are separate. These infections are passed on through sexual contact and the methods for treating them are distinct.
