Understanding anxiety disorder is not only a case of learning about what it is, but also of recognizing its presence. The different types have similar cognitive and physical symptoms, yet unique characteristics exist for each variety. These conditions are separated by medical opinion into six main types. Such conditions may be so emotionally debilitating, that many who are aware of having them will avoid treatment out of shame or distress.
Feelings of nervousness and anxiety are normal and even beneficial responses to dangerous situations and prior to important or stressful events. The physical symptoms accompanying nervousness over some event, are a reaction to powerful chemicals released into ones body because of some distressing trigger. Such fight or flight responses are useful defensive reactions to real dangers one may encounter.
The difference between a normal fear reaction and a disorder is one of degree and whether or not it is appropriate to the situation. When feelings of unreasoning panic result from everyday stressful events, a person may become so frightened by the sensations that it interferes with their ability to conduct normal activities. Even though this is the most commonly occurring emotional problem, experienced by as much as a third of the population at some time, many feel too disturbed to seek treatment.
Evidence for a genetic component to these tendencies is increasingly accepted since they seem to run in families. Many therapists think that abusive treatment in early childhood may be the cause for irrational emotional behaviors. What is known is that when daily life is affected by the consistent appearance of such reactions, a disorder is likely.
Some are so disturbed by their feelings of dread that they will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid repeated episodes, and alter their behavior. The discomfort produced by uncontrolled sweating, trembling and a pounding heartbeat in a public setting is enough to cause some to become withdrawn and engage in denial. The tendency to substance abuse is a common reaction to console oneself over the reluctance to seek treatment.
Two conditions are social phobias, or fear of social situations, and specific phobias, of which there are many, such as claustrophobia. The other four types are the panic reaction to past trauma, known as post stress, repetition of obsessive behaviors, or obsessive compulsive disorder, panic attacks, and generalized anxiety.
A treatment regimen meeting with success is the two fold approach of drug therapy combined with cognitive behavior therapy. This includes prescribing anti depressant drugs and building coping skills through therapy. The biggest hurdle to understanding anxiety disorder may be admitting to needing treatment.
